Pond and Garden Plants
To create a thriving habitat for wildlife, we recommend incorporating a mix of plants suited to your pond’s size and surroundings. Below is a guide to help you get started.
-
Oxygenating Plants
Essential for maintaining water quality, these submerged plants provide shelter for invertebrates and tadpoles while oxygenating the water. -
Tall Plants
Ideal for dragonflies and damselflies, tall plants offer perching spots and emerging points for their nymphs. -
Marginal Plants
Plant these around the pond’s edges to support pollinators (like bees and butterflies) and provide cover for amphibians both in and out of the water. They also create shelter for birds visiting the pond. -
Edge Plants (e.g., Ferns)
Planted around the pond’s perimeter, these add dense cover for amphibians, hedgehogs, and small mammals. They also help blend the pond naturally into your garden. -
Safe Entry/Exit Points
Ensure wildlife can access and leave the pond safely by adding gentle slopes, rocks, or shallow areas. This is especially important for hedgehogs, frogs, and other creatures.
Pond Size & Custom Packages
The number of plants required depends on your pond’s size. We offer tailored plant packages for different pond dimensions—please contact us to discuss your needs. A small fee applies for this bespoke service.
No, deep water plants do not require repotting. Keep them in their original mesh basket – there’s no need to remove it
-
1-litre lilies: Repot into a 3-litre (or larger) mesh basket.
-
3-litre lilies: Not required, but they’ll thrive in a larger basket.
-
10-litre & 30-litre lilies: No repotting needed. Keep them in their original mesh basket.
-
9cm marginals: Repot into a mesh basket. Place in the pond at no deeper than 1/3 of their max recommended depth to help them establish.
-
1-litre marginals: No repotting required, but a larger basket is beneficial. Place at no deeper than 1/2 their max recommended depth.
-
Tall plants (over 60cm): Repot into a larger basket or plant in gravel to stabilize them in windy conditions.
-
3-litre & 5-litre plants: No repotting needed. Place directly on the pond shelf at their required depth.
Simply place them on the pond surface, ensuring their roots are submerged in water.
Remove the plant from its pot and replant it in damp soil or a bog area. Dig a hole deep enough to cover the root ball completely.
Planting depth refers to the measurement from the point where the plant emerges from the soil (the crown) to the surface of the water.
-
For plants in a mesh basket or planting bag, this is measured from the top of the basket/bag to the water’s surface.
-
Detailed planting depth guides are provided on each product page on our website and on individual plant labels.
-
Maximum planting depth is a guideline, not a target. Most marginal plants thrive as long as their roots (or “feet”) are kept wet, even in shallower water.
Products
Plants are great for controlling algae and blanketweed as they compete for the nutrients, but if you need an extra bit of help (especially while your pond is new) then adding barley straw can help combat the green menace.
All of our pond plants have repotting instructions on the product page, and the information is also available above in our Pond Plants FAQ section above. We sell a wide variety of pond planting baskets in our store.
We also have bags of specialist aquatic soil for repotting pond plants.
Pond plants get a lot of their nutrients from either the water column, aquatic soil or sediment at the bottom of the pond. Some flowering plants (such as lilies) do benefit from annual feeding,, which come in the form of easy to administer fertilizer.
