Bring a touch of ancient beauty to your garden with Rough Horsetail, a stunning evergreen native to the UK. This exceptional plant has stood the test of time, dating back over 300 million years when it grew as tall as trees! Today, it adds year-round structure and interest to pond edges, wetlands, and moist gardens, thriving in full sun or partial shade.
Incredibly hardy, Rough Horsetail can survive even 500 miles inside the Arctic Circle, making it a resilient choice for your outdoor space. It’s perfect for creating a natural, wildlife-friendly environment, providing a valuable perch for flying insects like dragonflies. Whether planted in large clumps at the edges of bigger ponds or used to mimic the look of rushes in smaller ponds, it’s easy to care for and adds a unique, manageable charm.
Thriving in moist, sandy habitats such as wetlands, streams, marshes, and pond shores, Rough Horsetail prefers full sun and moist conditions but can tolerate wet, poorly drained areas. With few pest or disease problems, it’s a low-maintenance plant

Allow the previous year’s growth to remain intact during the winter months. When new shoots reach approximately 15cm in height in the spring, proceed to trim the old ones down.
Repotting Instructions
9cm marginal plants require potting into a mesh basket. Place in a pond no deeper than 1/3 maximum recommended planting depth to allow the plants to establish.
1ltr marginal plants do not require repotting but will benefit from a bigger basket, there is no need to remove the mesh basket. Place in pond no deeper than 1/2 maximum recommended planting depth to allow the plants to establish. Plants over 60cm height growth will benefit from repotting into a larger mesh basket or should be planted in gravel to prevent them from falling over in a breeze.
3ltr and 5ltr plants do not require repotting; there is no need to remove the mesh basket. Place on the shelf of the pond at the required depth
