Soft Rush (Juncus effusus) is a fantastic native plant that brings life and movement to wetlands, pond edges, and boggy areas. With its bright green, flexible stems forming elegant arching clumps, it adds a soft, natural look to any water-friendly garden. From late spring to summer, small greenish-brown flowers appear in loose clusters along the stems, adding subtle charm.
This resilient rush is a wildlife magnet – its dense growth provides year-round shelter for birds, small mammals, and insects, while its stems help dragonflies emerge from the water. It also plays a key role in preventing soil erosion and creating feeding grounds for wildfowl and waders.
Happy in wet soil, shallow water, or even containers (as long as they stay moist), Soft Rush is a low-maintenance way to boost biodiversity and add vertical interest to your garden.

Care Instructions
Soft Rush thrives in wet, boggy soil or shallow water and prefers some shade. Remove dead foliage and old flower stems in spring, and deadhead after flowering to prevent self-seeding.
If needed, divide clumps between mid-spring and early summer to keep it looking fresh.
Repotting Instructions
Can also be planted in soil – do not allow to dry out in warm weather.
9cm marginal plants require potting into a mesh basket. Place in a pond no deeper than 1/3 maximum recommended planting depth to allow the plants to establish.
1ltr marginal plants do not require repotting but will benefit from a bigger basket, there is no need to remove the mesh basket. Place in pond no deeper than 1/2 maximum recommended planting depth to allow the plants to establish. Plants over 60cm height growth will benefit from repotting into a larger mesh basket or should be planted in gravel to prevent them from falling over in a breeze.
3ltr and 5ltr plants do not require repotting; there is no need to remove the mesh basket. Place on the shelf of the pond at the required depth.
