Lesser Water Plantain (Baldellia ranunculoides) is a charming native plant that brings delicate beauty and important ecological benefits to small ponds and shallow water features. This dainty perennial forms slender clumps of green leaves, topped in summer with pretty pale lilac or white flowers, each with three delicate petals and a cheerful yellow centre.
Sadly, its populations have declined due to habitat loss and water pollution, making it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens. Perfect for small ponds where larger plants might overwhelm it, this little gem thrives in shallow water or along pond edges, providing shelter for aquatic insects and adding a touch of wild elegance.
For extra blooms, simply trim back spent flowers to encourage a fresh flush. A must-have for nature lovers looking to support native species.

Care Instructions
Lesser Water Plantain is easy to grow in shallow water or at pond edges. Trim faded flowers to encourage more blooms and divide clumps in spring if needed. It’s generally pest and disease-free, making it a low-maintenance choice for wildlife ponds.
Repotting Instructions
9cm marginal plants require potting into a mesh basket. Place in a pond no deeper than 1/3 maximum recommended planting depth to allow the plants to establish.
1ltr marginal plants do not require repotting but will benefit from a bigger basket, there is no need to remove the mesh basket. Place in pond no deeper than 1/2 maximum recommended planting depth to allow the plants to establish. Plants over 60cm height growth will benefit from repotting into a larger mesh basket or should be planted in gravel to prevent them from falling over in a breeze.
3ltr and 5ltr plants do not require repotting; there is no need to remove the mesh basket. Place on the shelf of the pond at the required depth.
Thrives in shallow water – trim spent flowers for more blooms.
