If you are looking to bring a piece of rare British heritage to your garden, the Floating Water Plantain is a special choice.
This hardy native is great for wildlife enthusiasts, originating from the clear lakes of Snowdonia and Cumbria and often featuring in local conservation projects.
It’s highly adaptable; in shallow water or boggy mud, it displays oval floating leaves, while in deeper spots up to 4m, it develops long, narrow foliage. From summer onwards, it produces delicate white three-petaled flowers with bright yellow centres that look really lovely against the greenery.
Because it is slower-growing and more delicate than aggressive surface cover like Water hawthorn, it’s a good for smaller ponds where space is at a premium, although it doesn’t like to be too crowded by other plants.
Most importantly, it is a powerhouse for biodiversity, creating a vital sanctuary by providing shade, shelter, and resting spots for frogs, newts, and other aquatic life. By adding this rare beauty to a sunny, clear spot in your pond, you aren’t just decorating, you are helping to preserve a piece of UK natural history.

Care Instructions
To keep your Floating Water Plantain thriving, plant it in a sunny spot with the crown a minimum of 5cm below the surface, ensuring you don’t disturb the soil too much during the process. Since this plant prefers clear, well-oxygenated water and doesn’t like competing for light, keep an eye on any surrounding overgrowth.
You can encourage a longer blooming season by pinching off spent flower heads, which also helps prevent unwanted self-seeding.
Simply trim back the old foliage once it dies down in autumn or early spring to make way for fresh growth, and enjoy this low-maintenance gem as it settles into your pond
Repotting Instructions
9cm marginal plants require potting into a mesh basket. Place in a pond no deeper than 1/3 maximum recommended planting depth to allow the plants to establish.
1ltr marginal plants do not require repotting but will benefit from a bigger basket, there is no need to remove the mesh basket. Place in pond no deeper than 1/2 maximum recommended planting depth to allow the plants to establish. Plants over 60cm height growth will benefit from repotting into a larger mesh basket or should be planted in gravel to prevent them from falling over in a breeze.
3ltr and 5ltr plants do not require repotting; there is no need to remove the mesh basket. Place on the shelf of the pond at the required depth.
