Water Plantain is a graceful and hardy aquatic perennial that brings both beauty and ecological value to ponds, bog gardens, and slow-moving waterways. This tall, striking plant forms lush clumps of grey-green, lance-shaped leaves, creating an attractive backdrop along pond margins. From June through September, it sends up slender, branching stems adorned with delicate pale lilac or white flowers, each bloom opening in the afternoon and early evening to attract a host of pollinators.
A favourite among bees, butterflies, and hoverflies, Water Plantain provides a rich source of nectar and pollen, supporting these insects throughout the summer months. Its tall, sturdy stems also make it an excellent habitat for dragonflies and damselflies, which use the plant as a resting perch and a safe place for their nymphs to emerge from the water. Beneath the surface, the foliage offers shelter for aquatic life, making it a great plant to build a thriving pond ecosystem.
Naturally found in shallow waters and along muddy banks, Water Plantain is easy to grow and requires minimal maintenance. It is generally pest-free and disease-free, making it a hassle-free choice for both beginner and experienced pond keepers. While it thrives in larger ponds and naturalistic planting schemes, its height and spread mean it may not be suitable for very small garden ponds.
With its elegant flowers, wildlife-friendly benefits, and adaptability, Water Plantain is a wonderful addition to any water garden, helping to create a vibrant, balanced habitat for a wide range of creatures.

Care Instructions
Regular deadheading of spent flowers prevents excessive self-seeding, and the foliage should be cut back in late autumn.
Repotting Instructions
Can also be planted in very wet soil – do not allow to dry out.
9cm marginal pond plants require potting into a mesh basket. Place in a pond no deeper than 1/3 maximum recommended planting depth to allow the plants to establish.
1ltr marginal pond plants do not require repotting but will benefit from a bigger basket, there is no need to remove the mesh basket. Place in pond no deeper than 1/2 maximum recommended planting depth to allow the plants to establish. Plants over 60cm height growth will benefit from repotting into a larger mesh basket or should be planted in gravel to prevent them from falling over in a breeze.
3ltr and 5ltr pond plants do not require repotting; there is no need to remove the mesh basket. Place on the shelf of the pond at the required depth.
