Hard Rush (Juncus inflexus) is a fantastic British native plant that brings year-round interest to your pond or boggy area with its dense tufts of striking blue-green, cylindrical stems.
Evergreen and tough, it provides essential winter cover for wildlife, offering shelter when other plants die back. From late spring to midsummer, loose clusters of delicate brown flowers appear at the tips of the stems, adding extra charm. This low-maintenance rush thrives in shallow water but also adapts well to consistently moist soil, making it perfect for pond margins, damp gardens, or even heavy alkaline soils.
Its upright stems create excellent perches for dragonflies to emerge and hunt, while the dense clumps offer protection for frogs, insects, and other small creatures. A must-have for any wildlife-friendly garden!

Care Instructions
Hard Rush is an easy-going plant that needs no pruning – just a tidy-up after flowering if needed. It grows best in permanently moist, acidic soil in sun or part shade, thriving in boggy ground or shallow water. Surprisingly adaptable, it also handles heavy alkaline soils well.
Happily pest and disease-free, it’s a fuss-free choice for any damp or waterside spot.
Repotting Instructions
Can also be planted in very wet soil – do not allow to dry out.
9cm marginal plants require potting into a mesh basket. Place in a pond no deeper than 1/3 maximum recommended planting depth to allow the plants to establish.
1ltr marginal plants do not require repotting but will benefit from a bigger basket, there is no need to remove the mesh basket. Place in pond no deeper than 1/2 maximum recommended planting depth to allow the plants to establish. Plants over 60cm height growth will benefit from repotting into a larger mesh basket or should be planted in gravel to prevent them from falling over in a breeze.
3ltr and 5ltr plants do not require repotting; there is no need to remove the mesh basket. Place on the shelf of the pond at the required depth.
